Coco slabs for tabletop and trough strawberry

A small root volume that cannot be allowed to dry

Elevated tabletop strawberry gives each plant a very small volume of substrate to live in. That changes the priorities completely compared with a tomato slab: the buffer is short, so water holding capacity and re-wettability matter more than raw drainage, and a substrate that dries unevenly will show up as uneven fruit within days rather than weeks.

Strawberry is also among the more salt-sensitive crops grown on coco. Residual sodium and potassium that a tomato crop would tolerate can suppress a strawberry crop, which is why the wash matters as much as the blend.

Which coco blend suits strawberry

Straight 100% cocopeat, at 7.32 L/kg water holding capacity and 5.2% air-filled porosity, is the usual starting point for tabletop strawberry. The high retention is an advantage where the root volume per plant is small and irrigation is frequent and short.

An 80:20 cocopeat-to-chip blend, at 6.73 L/kg and 10.2% air-filled porosity, is the better choice in warmer climates, in longer troughs, or wherever the base of the slab has previously stayed too wet. The chip fraction opens the profile without giving up much buffer.

Low EC matters more here than the blend does. We supply washed low-EC material for strawberry as standard, and we can supply buffered material where your programme calls for it.

These are starting points from measured properties, not prescriptions. Tell us your trough or tabletop volume per plant, your irrigation frequency and your climate, and we will suggest a ratio — including one that is not on our standard list, since we blend to order.

Custom strawberry slabs for your trough system

Strawberry systems vary more than almost any other protected crop, so almost nothing about our slabs is fixed. Blend ratio, particle grade, compressed and expanded dimensions to fit your trough or tabletop, planting hole count and spacing for your plant density, drainage hole position, film colour and your own print — all produced to order.

Full specification for all five blend ratios is on the coco grow bags page, and our testing and batch reporting is described on the quality page.

Strawberry substrate questions growers ask

Are you a strawberry substrate manufacturer or a trader?

We are a manufacturer. Blending, compression and packing happen at our own facility in Peravurani, Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu. Visitors are welcome.

Which blend do you recommend for tabletop strawberry?

Straight 100% cocopeat is the usual starting point at 7.32 L per kg water holding capacity, because the root volume per plant is small and irrigation is frequent and short. An 80:20 blend suits warmer climates or longer troughs.

Why does low EC matter more for strawberry?

Strawberry is among the more salt-sensitive crops grown on coco. Residual sodium and potassium that a tomato crop would tolerate can suppress a strawberry crop, which is why the wash matters as much as the blend.

Can you make slabs to fit our trough?

Yes. Compressed and expanded dimensions, planting hole count and spacing, drainage hole position, film colour and print are all made to order.

What EC measurement method do your figures use?

The 1:1.5 volume extract method. If your specification uses saturated media extract, tell us and we will supply the equivalent figure.

Do you supply buffered material for strawberry?

Our standard product is unbuffered, washed with water alone to below 0.5 mS/cm. That matters for strawberry, because low EC here is achieved naturally rather than by chemical treatment. Calcium buffering is a separate chemical process available on request. Tell us your fertigation approach and we will advise which is right.

Other crops we supply: Tomato · Cucumber · Capsicum & bell pepper · Blueberry

Our products: Coco grow bags · 5 kg blocks · Coco chips · 600 g bricks · Open-top bags · Coir fibre

Blending and packing are done to your requirement. Ratios, particle grade, compressed dimensions, hole configuration, film and print are all made to order. Tell us what your crop and your handling line need and we will produce to it.

Tell us your trough dimensions, plant density and irrigation frequency, and we will propose a specification.
