An open top planter bag arrives as a compressed unit of coco substrate inside its own film sleeve. You place it, cut the top open, hydrate it, and plant into it. There is no separate pot to buy, fill, store or dispose of, and no loose substrate to handle on site.
For growers, that removes the most labour-intensive part of establishing a crop. Filling pots is slow, dusty work that has to happen in a short window before planting. A planter bag turns it into placing a unit and adding water.
Compared with a flat slab, the open top format gives a deeper root volume per plant. That suits crops with a larger root system, longer cycles, or situations where you want more buffer against irrigation failure than a shallow slab can hold.
Berry production. Blueberry, raspberry and blackberry are commonly grown in open top bags or pots because they need a deep, free-draining root volume. A high-chip blend in a planter bag gives the air-filled porosity these crops require while holding enough water between irrigations. Our recommendations for blueberry are on the blueberry substrate page.
Long-cycle protected vegetables. Where a grower wants more root volume than a slab provides — larger tomato or pepper plants, or a crop being carried longer than usual — the open top format gives that buffer without changing the irrigation approach.
Nursery and propagation. Uniform units that can be placed by hand, hydrated in place and planted the same day.
Cannabis and other high-value crops where legal for commercial horticulture, and where root volume per plant is generous.
Trials and new sites. Because the bag is self-contained, growers often use planter bags to trial coco substrate before committing a whole house to a gutter and slab system.
The deeper the bag, the more the base matters. Water collects at the bottom of any container, and in a planter bag that saturated zone is further from the plant than it would be in a slab. The blend has to keep air moving through the lower profile.
Higher chip content — a 20:80 or straight chip mix, measuring 25.06% and 30.8% air-filled porosity respectively — suits deep bags, berry crops and high-rainfall or high-humidity conditions. Water leaves the base quickly instead of sitting there.
Balanced blends — around 50:50, at 21% air-filled porosity — suit most protected vegetable work in a planter bag, where you want drainage without giving up buffer.
Higher cocopeat content — 80:20 or straight cocopeat, at 10.2% and 5.2% air-filled porosity — holds the most water and suits nursery work, drier climates, and systems where irrigation is less frequent.
Full properties across our blend range, with water holding capacity and air-filled porosity for each, are on the coco grow bags page. The relationship between chip content and root-zone air is explained on the coco chips page.
EC measured by 1:1.5 volume extract method. If your specification uses saturated media extract, tell us and we will supply the equivalent figure. See our guide to EC methods and buffering.
Blending and packing are done to your requirement. Bag volume, blend ratio, hole layout and print are all made to order — tell us your crop, plant density and irrigation frequency and we will propose a specification.
We are a manufacturer. Blending, compression, filling and packing all happen at our own facility in Peravurani, Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu. Visitors are welcome.
Compressed and expanded dimensions are made to order. Tell us the litreage your growers plan around and we will compress to hit it.
The deeper the bag, the more the base matters. Higher chip content, at 25.06% or 30.8% air-filled porosity, suits deep bags, berry crops and humid conditions. Balanced blends around 21% suit most protected vegetable work.
Yes. Hole count, diameter and position are all made to your specification, and they determine how the base of the bag behaves.
